Nancy will be presenting a slide show and workshop entitled  Hawaiʻi Island Seed Exchange–Reviving Community Food Self-Reliance, and will give an overview of agricultural seed today: where we have come from, where we are now, and how she built the Hawai'i Island Seed Exchange into a celebrated Big Island event now in its sixth year.

A few guidelines on plant material:

• Please help to malama the island, take care to bring only GMO-FREE, PEST-FREE, NON-INVASIVE seeds and plants to this event.

  1. The Landscape Industry Council of Hawaii has prepared a helpful list of plants to avoid cultivating in the Hawaiian islands due to their invasive habit and risk to our native ecosystems. Please consult it HERE when deciding which plants and seeds to bring to the exchange. Also check out the Hawaiian Ecosystems at Risk project for a more comprehensive listing of weeds, pests, and diseases. Staff from the Kauai Invasive Species Committee and other volunteers will be on hand to help with invasive plant and pest identification.

  2. At the request of Kaua`i taro growers, taro will not be traded at this event. This is to avoid spread of the apple snail into new areas and so that we can devote more time and education on this sacred plant at a future event.

  3. To ensure that we do not inadvertently spread GMO-contaminated seed, please do not bring corn, soy, cotton, tobacco, or papaya that was grown on Kaua`i. All these plants are grown open-pollinated by the various GMO companies on Kaua`i. Seed from these species will be permitted if they were grown in non-GMO areas of the world.

• We are limiting plants and plant cuttings to Kaua`i grown stock. Please do not bring plants directly obtained from off island. Such plants may harbor pests such as fire ant or coqui frog, and should be quarantined before disseminating throughout the island.
